Markos Kambanis first visited Mount Athos in 1990 and since then numerous visits have followed. There he created a series of landscapes depicting nature and the built environment of Mount Athos, using acrylics, tempera, drawings and printmaking. At the same time, he undertook important commissions for mural compositions in monasteries (H.M. Simonos Petra, H.G M. Vatopaidiou, H.M. Iviron), for illustrations for relevant publications, and paintings for the building of the Civil Administration in Karyes.
He collaborated with the monastery of Simonopetra in an effort to research, preserve and promote the Mount Athos engraving art that once flourished there. To this end, he organized a printmaking workshop in Karyes. He is the curator of the Mount Athos Art Archives of the H.M. Simonos Petra, which deals with Athonite engraving and visual arts associated with Athos. He has edited relevant books and curated exhibitions (“Spyros Papaloukas, The Mount Athos paintings” and, “Mount Athos in Modern Greek Art”).
All his activities on Athos were presented at The Mount Athos Center in Thessaloniki (2009), the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens (2010) and the Giorgio de Chirico Art Center in Volos (2020). In 2010, Indiktos published an album in Greek entitled “Markos Kampanis, Painting on Mount Athos, 1990-2009”.
